Definition Post-Hyperreality

Definition:

- an image or simulation, or an aggregate of images and simulations, that either distorts the reality it purports to depict or does not in fact depict anything with a real existence at all, but which nonetheless comes to constitute reality
-an image or simulation, or an aggregate of images and simulations, that either distorts the reality it purports to depict or does not in fact depict anything with a real existence at all, but which nonetheless comes to constitute reality

Describing Words:

Surreal, heighten, censorship, misdirection

This image represents hyperreality in a way that is presented to the audience through the media. The components of the image feature a typical street setting which features a yellow cab, letting a passanger in as he stairs at a woman causing him to become distracted. The image features a type of scenario which would be depicted in a television setting and is not an accurate representation of the real world. The photographer emphasises this by using iconic imagery such as the yellow taxi, along with the use of attractive people within the image. The colours within the image are dramatically enhanced, causing tones to appear more vivid and oversaturated. This is done to express that the world is not an accurate representation of the real world and it is reminiscent of the way that the media will colour grade images and video in order to heighten the visual representation of the world.

This image shows the influence in which the media has over the world. The image is composed of brands that have become apart of our everyday lives. As far as the eye can see there is an advertisement. This is a reflection on how much of our lives are dictated by the media and how we cannot escape from being exposed to it. The colours featured within the image are extremely bright, each colour is used to draw the audience's attention just as an advert would, taking them away from the details of the real world and only focusing on aspects of the media that are shown within the image.

This image from Cedric Delsaux uses a visually simple setting and uses photo joiner methods in order to make an addition. An AT-AT from Star Wars can be seen within the background moving among the buildings. This image focuses on realism and successfully integrates an iconic object into the real world. This image can also elaborate on the subject of hyperreality as the image appears rather dull through the use of a muted colour pallet and average location. This is done in order to make a comparison between the heightened, fantasy reality of Star Wars and the dull real world. This shows the audience that real life is vastly different to how it is portrayed within the media.

This image depicts one of the most well known examples of hyperreality. What appears to be a fashion shoot of Madonna which has been heavily digitally manipulated. Photoshop has been used in order to airbrush her skin in order to smooth out any wrinkles and make the skin appear healthier. Another technique, referred to as 'dodging and burning' has been used as a means of contouring aspects within the image, causing features such as the nose and jaw to appear more defined. These edited features combine in a way that create an image of someone that society deems attractive, despite being a false representation of the person who is being photographed. This is perhaps the most damaging form of hyperreality, particularly among women and young girls. An unachievable body image is produced by the media which causes the audience to question their own appearances, developing eating disorders and in some cases spending thousands on cosmetic surgery in order to achieve this unachievable look.

Blurring Definition Post

Definition:

- To make or become unclear or less distinct

Describing Words:

Obscure, Smear, Smudge

This image shows all of the properties that blurring can have within an image. This photographer has clearly directed the audiences' eyes by using the effect. The focal point becomes sharper as the background becomes a blur. This clearly shows where the attention is intended. The effect is emphasised through the use of contrasts as the background appears as dull and similar colours while the subject can be seen using strong colours such as red and yellow.

This use of blurring within this image can accurately reflect the tone that was intended by the photographer. The use of the effect in this sense creates a sense of momentum within the image and danger. These connotations could not be reflected without the use of the technique. Instead of being static, the image is given new life was everything within the image is given a sense of kinetic energy. The photographer may use this effect in order to reflect the speed and occasional rush of riding a bike of road.

This image shows how the blurring technique can be used to highlight a static object within the frame. It is clear that everything around the woman is moving at high speeds, making it difficult to identify what is taking lace around the woman. This can be used on a metaphorical level to indicate that the world is constantly changing/shifting around at immense speeds and its sometimes hard to take a moment within the chaos of it all.

This image shows another example of how the effect can be used for metaphorical purposes. The photographer has purposely singled out the wing mirror of the car as it travels at high speeds. As a result the background can appear to be blurred, only revealing shapes and colours in the distance. The metaphorical factors that could be taken from this could centre around the passage of time and learning from our past. The road ahead is unclear but what remains behind us is clear, showing that we can learn a lot from what we have experienced when proceeding into the future.

Definition Post- Sequencing

Definition:

-To arrange in a particular order

Describing Words:

Repetition, range, flowing,

This example of sequencing shows the audience how the technique can be used in extraordinary detail. We can see each component of the skater's movement. The amount of images within the frame allow the audience to dissect each individual phase of the move. The progression of the image is clearly shown to the audience by starting the move at the top left of the frame and then progressively moving down to the bottom right.

This image shows how we can use sequencing in nature and can learn from each aspect of the image. We can see how the bird slows down in order to stop at it's destination in time. We can learn a lot from this use of sequencing. We can even judge the speed that the bird is travelling in by looking at the distance within each image of the bird.

This image shows how sequencing can be used to tell a grand story over the course of years through simple visual differences. We can see that the person within the images has grown from being a child to their death. The image starts empty with in order to show that we com into this world with nothing. As the image continues, we see key items that define different moments in the persons life such as baby toys, games and iPods. As the child grows older we see pens and glasses to show maturity and work. As the image draws to an end, we see a bible. This shows that the person is being confronted with the inevitability of death and is attempting to seek comfort within religion. Finally we see that the image is dark and empty, meaning that the person has died, leaving as they started.

This image shows how informative the technique can be, as well as showing how effects such as motion can be replicated through this technique. This began as a result of a bet to find out if all four legs of a horse would leave the ground when they ran. Using this method, they were able to analyse each part of the range of movement in order to come to the conclusion that all four legs would leave the floor. This technique would go on to inspire the use of film by becoming such a unique way of telling miniature stories.
